ARRL Field Day is the largest on-the-air operating event in Amateur Radio. It draws tens of thousands to the airwaves each year, bringing new and experienced hams together for a weekend of fun!

We need to set up about 12 noon on Saturday June 25th. We need volunteers to help with trailers and antennas, and of course the balloon filling and hook up. Some of you have indicated that you would help, please come out and have some fun. We also need operators. If you are any class amateur you can operate during this event as an extra class. HF is a lot of fun and you will meet others around this great nation and make some friends.

If you can't make our location check this site to search for a site near you. ARRL Field Day Locator

Echolink for Android PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 August 2010 22:22

Echolink is now available for download for Android phones.  Search for Echolilnk in the Market for download or scan this image.

echolink market code

You'll need to be registered with Echolink prior to running this software which can be done on www.echolink.org.

Once you sign in you can do a search for your favorite station and connect.  Sounds realy good over the speaker phone.  My first contact I made with the software, the operator on the repeater said my audio was choppy which I might be overdriving our internet connection and need some tweaking on our end.  Software runs real smooth and the 15 minutes that I had it running didn't drain my battery to bad.  You can send text messages to other users that are logged in to your link.  Favorites is a nice feature just like the full program on your PC.  Settings has options to pick your type of connection as direct if using wifii or relay if using the data on the phone, like 3G.  If you use direct on your WiFii network you have to make sure your router is setup to do Port Forwarding.  Other options to include using the speakerphone (default setting) or using the earpiece, user name as reported on the connection, microphone gain settings.

The website has more indepth information at http://www.echolink.org/faq_android.htm

Now you have no reason not to check into the net on Tuesday nights.

Loss of 70cm Spectrum PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 28 February 2011 22:54

In the Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club meeting tonight it was brought to the groups attention about a bill being proposed to the House called “Broadband for First Responders Act of 2011,” HR 607.

The Bill may have good intentions but they plan on taking a portion of the 70cm spectrum and putting it out to auction for commercial use to make up for loss revenue for giving public safety spectrum in the 700MHz range. The frequencies we stand to lose is 420 to 440 MHz and 450 - 470 MHz.

As quoted from ARRL http://www.arrl.org/hr-607

"While the ARRL and all Amateurs support the work of Public Safety and recognize their need for dedicated spectrum which would promote interoperability, the ARRL vigorously opposes HR 607 in its present form. HR 607 is a direct threat to our limited spectrum and the ARRL encourages all amateurs to appropriately voice their opposition to this bill. "

Field Day Helium Balloon long wire antenna PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 August 2010 22:47
This video was taken at the ARRL 2010 Field Day site for the Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club located in New Port Richey. This was our first attempt at flying a helium balloon with a long wire attached. We used a single conductor 24 gauge wire of 130 feet long. Made successful voice and digital contacts around the country with other clubs.
A big thanks to Bill NG4L who recorded and edit this video.
