Southeastern Division Election

Hello,

ARRL members should receive ballots for the Southeastern Division election during the next 2 weeks.

Please review your choices and vote for the candidate you feel can best represent YOU on the ARRL Board of Directors.

The ballot only allows 300 words for the candidates to introduce themselves and share their plans for the Division.
Therefore I have posted information on two web sites:
www.freewebs.com/w4stb contains my qualifications and ideas for the Southeastern Division.
and my bio is at www.qrz.com/w4stb.

Ham Radio Operators Demonstrate Modern Capabilities
Public Demo of Emergency Communications June 23-24

Newington, CT – Thousands of Ham Radio operators will be showing off their emergency capabilities this weekend. Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies world-wide. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio – often called “Ham radio” - was often the ONLY way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer “hams” traveled south to save lives and property. When trouble is brewing, ham radio people are often the first to provide critical information and communications. On the weekend of June 23-24, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with these ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. Showing the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and even historical Morse code, hams from across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

This annual event, called "Field Day" is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and back yards around the country. Their slogan, "When all else fails…”is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year's event.

What is Field Day

Dear Field Day Participant:

We have all been bitten… For some it happened at their neighbor’s house… For others it may have been with their father or uncle… Perhaps it was with a favorite teacher at school… but wherever and whenever it happened, there was a time that each of us active amateurs was:

“Bitten by the Bug”
The Amateur Radio Bug!

Amateur radio is about knowledge and growth. It is a hobby and service that truly offers “something for everyone.” It is a chance to learn and grow but above all amateur radio is about FUN. It is a hobby where we learn, share, and, well, just have a good time. And for many there is perhaps nothing more fun in the hobby than ARRL Field Day. Old friendships are renewed and new ones created. We become both teacher and student during that special fourth full weekend in June – sharing our experience while learning new things.
